Omori Shell Mounds
Dr.Edward.S.Morse discovered a shell layer while
he was on the train from Omori to Shinagawa in 1877.
In the same year , it was scientifically
excavated for
the first time in Japan and named the Omori
Shell Mounds.
The omori Shell Mounds were
the birthplace of Japan's archaeology,
and the area was designated
as a national historic spot in 1955.
The Omori Shell Mounds are said
to have been formed in the latter
or the end of Jomon period,
and are very precious to let us know
not only the ancient coastlines
but also people's living of those days.
